Moist Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
For the Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For the Chocolate Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup buttermilk
- 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the cocoa powder and water, stirring until smooth and well combined. Remove from the heat and let it cool slightly.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla extract.
- Slowly pour the warm chocolate mixture into the buttermilk mixture, whisking continuously.
- Add the flour, sugar, and salt. Mix just until everything is combined and the batter is smooth. Do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for about 30 minutes.
Make the Chocolate Frosting
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the buttermilk and cocoa powder and whisk until smooth.
- Remove from the heat and gradually whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
- Continue whisking until the frosting is smooth and creamy.
- Spread the warm frosting over the cooled cake.
