Cook Time: 45 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
Yield: 6 servings
Ingredients
- 1 (30 oz) bag frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
- 1 lb shaved ribeye steak
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 cups shredded provolone cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup Cheez Whiz
- 6 large eggs
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- Nonstick cooking spray
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
- In a large bowl, toss the thawed hash browns with olive oil, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Press firmly into the prepared baking dish to form an even layer.
- Bake for 20 minutes until the edges are golden brown and crispy.
- While the hash browns bake, melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 18–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized and jammy.
- Add the diced bell peppers and cook for another 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Increase heat to medium-high and add the shaved ribeye steak. Sprinkle with garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for 3–4 minutes, breaking up the meat as it browns.
- Spread the cheesesteak mixture evenly over the crispy hash brown crust.
- Sprinkle the provolone and mozzarella cheeses evenly across the top.
- In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth. Pour evenly over the casserole.
- Return to the oven and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until the eggs are set and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Warm the Cheez Whiz until smooth and pourable, then drizzle generously over the hot casserole.
- Let rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Pro Tip
For the ultimate cheese pull, buy a block of provolone and shred it yourself. Freshly shredded cheese melts smoother, creamier, and creates those irresistible stretchy bites everyone loves!
