Cocada con Leche Condensada

Cocada con leche condensada is a traditional Latin American coconut candy that’s sweet, chewy, and incredibly easy to make. It combines shredded coconut with sweetened condensed milk for a rich homemade dessert that’s perfect for parties, holidays, or afternoon coffee.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded coconut
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk or water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Cinnamon for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Grease a baking dish or tray lightly with butter.
  2. In a large saucepan, combine the condensed milk, sugar, butter, and milk.
  3. Add the shredded coconut and cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly.
  4. Continue cooking for about 15–20 minutes until the mixture thickens and starts pulling away from the bottom of the pan.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla if using.
  6. Spoon small portions onto the greased tray or spread the mixture evenly and cut into squares later.
  7. Let cool completely before serving.

Tips

  • Use fresh coconut for a softer texture and stronger coconut flavor.
  • Toast a little extra coconut and sprinkle it on top for added crunch.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Variations

  • Add cinnamon or lime zest for extra flavor.
  • Mix in chopped nuts or drizzle with chocolate.
  • For colorful cocadas, divide the mixture and add food coloring before shaping.
