Ultimate Patty Melt with Secret Sauce

A crispy, buttery sandwich packed with juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, melty cheese, and a creamy tangy secret sauce — diner-style comfort food at home!

Ingredients

For the Patty Melts

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • 8 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • 8 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

For the Secret Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp pickle relish
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

Instructions

  1. Make the Secret Sauce
    Mix all sauce ingredients in a bowl until smooth. Refrigerate while cooking.
  2. Caramelize the Onions
    Melt 2 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions and cook slowly for 20–25 minutes until golden and soft.
  3. Cook the Patties
    Season beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape into thin oval patties. Cook in a hot skillet for 3–4 minutes per side.
  4. Assemble the Patty Melts
    Spread secret sauce on bread slices. Add cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, then top with another bread slice.
  5. Grill the Sandwiches
    Butter the outside of each sandwich. Cook in skillet over medium heat until bread is crispy and golden and cheese is melted, about 3 minutes per side.
  6. Serve Hot
    Slice in half and serve with fries, pickles, or chips.

Tip: Add crispy bacon or jalapeños for extra flavor!
