4-Ingredient Slow Cooker Kalua Pig
Ingredients
- 1.5–2 kg pork shoulder (also called pork butt)
- 1–2 tbsp coarse sea salt
- 1 tbsp liquid smoke
- 3–4 cloves garlic (optional but recommended)
Instructions
- Prep the pork
Rinse and pat the pork shoulder dry. Trim excess fat if needed. - Season
Rub the pork all over with sea salt. Make small slits and insert garlic cloves inside (optional). - Add flavor
Place the pork in the slow cooker. Pour liquid smoke evenly over the top. - Cook low and slow
Cover and cook on LOW for 8–10 hours or until the meat is very tender and falls apart easily. - Shred
Remove the pork and shred it using two forks. Mix it with the juices in the slow cooker for extra flavor.
Serving Ideas
- Serve with steamed rice and cabbage (traditional Hawaiian style)
- Use in sandwiches, tacos, or wraps
- Add a squeeze of lime for freshness
Tips
- Don’t add extra liquid—the pork will release its own juices
- The longer it cooks, the more tender and smoky it gets
- You can crisp it in a pan after shredding for extra texture
