Caramelized Sweet Potatoes

A glossy, caramel-coated sweet potato side dish with the perfect sweet–savory balance. Delicious alongside roasted chicken or grilled meat.

 Ingredients

  • 3 large sweet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey (or maple syrup)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • A pinch of salt
  • Optional: a little vanilla or nutmeg
  • Powdered sugar for garnish (optional)

 Prep

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into medium-thick rounds.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  3. Grease a baking dish with butter and arrange the sweet potato slices in a single layer.

 Make the glaze

  1. In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter.
  2. Add the brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. Stir until the mixture becomes thick, smooth, and glossy.

 Bake

  1. Pour the glaze over the sweet potatoes and gently toss to coat.
  2. Bake for 35–45 minutes.
  3. Flip the slices halfway through so they caramelize on both sides.
  4. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes—the glaze will thicken into a caramel coating.

 Serve

  • Dust lightly with powdered sugar if desired.
  • Serve warm.
