Caramelized Sweet Potatoes
A glossy, caramel-coated sweet potato side dish with the perfect sweet–savory balance. Delicious alongside roasted chicken or grilled meat.
Ingredients
- 3 large sweet potatoes
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup honey (or maple syrup)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- A pinch of salt
- Optional: a little vanilla or nutmeg
- Powdered sugar for garnish (optional)
Prep
- Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into medium-thick rounds.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Grease a baking dish with butter and arrange the sweet potato slices in a single layer.
Make the glaze
- In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter.
- Add the brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, and salt.
- Stir until the mixture becomes thick, smooth, and glossy.
Bake
- Pour the glaze over the sweet potatoes and gently toss to coat.
- Bake for 35–45 minutes.
- Flip the slices halfway through so they caramelize on both sides.
- Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes—the glaze will thicken into a caramel coating.
Serve
- Dust lightly with powdered sugar if desired.
- Serve warm.
