Old Fashioned Creamy Cucumber Salad
Cool, crisp, and coated in a rich, tangy dressing, this Old Fashioned Creamy Cucumber Salad is the ultimate summer side dish. It’s the perfect companion for grilled burgers, barbecue, fried chicken, or any family dinner. With just a handful of simple ingredients, this classic recipe comes together in minutes and tastes even better after chilling in the refrigerator!
Ingredients
- 2 large English cucumbers or 4 medium garden cucumbers
- ½ medium red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon fresh dill, chopped, or ½ teaspoon dried dill
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Wash the cucumbers well. Peel them completely, partially peel them for a striped look, or leave the skin on if you prefer extra crunch. Slice the cucumbers into thin rounds.
- Thinly slice the red onion and add it to a large mixing bowl with the cucumbers.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, dill, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until smooth and creamy.
- Pour the dressing over the cucumbers and onions. Toss gently until everything is evenly coated.
- Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, to allow the flavors to blend.
- Stir once before serving and garnish with extra fresh dill or cracked black pepper if desired.
Tips
- Sprinkle the sliced cucumbers with a little salt and let them sit for 20–30 minutes before mixing. Pat them dry to remove excess moisture for an even creamier salad.
- Fresh dill gives the best flavor, but dried dill works well too.
- This salad is best enjoyed the same day, though leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 2 days.
