Baked Macaroni and Cheese with Seasoned Butter Sauce
Ingredients
For the Mac and Cheese:
- 1 lb (450 g) elbow macaroni
- 4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 3 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
For the Seasoned Butter Topping:
- ½ cup melted butter
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon dried parsley
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook the macaroni in salted boiling water until just al dente. Drain well.
- In a large saucepan, melt the 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute.
- Slowly pour in the milk and heavy cream, whisking constantly until smooth and slightly thickened.
- Add garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt.
- Reduce the heat to low and gradually stir in the cheddar and mozzarella until completely melted and creamy.
- Add the cooked macaroni and mix until every piece is coated in the cheese sauce.
- Transfer the macaroni to a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
- Mix the melted butter with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, smoked paprika, parsley, and red pepper flakes.
- Pour the seasoned butter mixture over the macaroni, as shown in the picture.
- Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, until bubbly and golden on top.
- Let it rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
Tip: For an extra cheesy crust, sprinkle another ½ cup of cheddar and a little Parmesan over the top before baking.
