Baked Macaroni and Cheese with Seasoned Butter Sauce

Ingredients

For the Mac and Cheese:

  • 1 lb (450 g) elbow macaroni
  • 4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste

For the Seasoned Butter Topping:

  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the macaroni in salted boiling water until just al dente. Drain well.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt the 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute.
  4. Slowly pour in the milk and heavy cream, whisking constantly until smooth and slightly thickened.
  5. Add garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and gradually stir in the cheddar and mozzarella until completely melted and creamy.
  7. Add the cooked macaroni and mix until every piece is coated in the cheese sauce.
  8. Transfer the macaroni to a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
  9. Mix the melted butter with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, smoked paprika, parsley, and red pepper flakes.
  10. Pour the seasoned butter mixture over the macaroni, as shown in the picture.
  11. Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, until bubbly and golden on top.
  12. Let it rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Tip: For an extra cheesy crust, sprinkle another ½ cup of cheddar and a little Parmesan over the top before baking.
