Perfect Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Perfect Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

A smooth, creamy, and rich vanilla buttercream that’s perfect for frosting cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other sweet treats. It pipes beautifully and has a delicious homemade flavor.

Ingredients

– 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
– 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
– 2–3 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
– 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
– ¼ teaspoon salt (optional, to balance the sweetness)

Instructions

1. Beat the Butter

In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed for 3–5 minutes, until light, fluffy, and pale in color.

2. Add the Sugar

Gradually add the powdered sugar, about one cup at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition until fully incorporated.

3. Add the Flavoring

Pour in the vanilla extract, salt (if using), and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Beat on medium-high speed for another 3–4 minutes until the frosting becomes smooth, creamy, and fluffy.

4. Adjust the Consistency

If the frosting is too thick, add more cream, one teaspoon at a time. If it’s too thin, mix in a little more powdered sugar until the desired consistency is reached.

5. Use or Store

Spread or pipe the buttercream onto completely cooled cakes or cupcakes. Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Before using again, let it come to room temperature and beat until fluffy.

Tips

– Use real butter for the richest flavor.
– Sift the powdered sugar to prevent lumps.
– Add food coloring or different extracts to create flavored or colored buttercream.
– This recipe frosts about 24 cupcakes or one 9-inch two-layer cake.
