Slow Cooker Amish Cube Steak with Brown Gravy
Ingredients
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 6 cube steaks (about 4 oz / 115 g each)
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- 3 cups water, divided
- 1 packet brown gravy mix
- 1 packet mushroom gravy mix
- 1 packet onion gravy mix
For serving (optional)
- Mashed potatoes
- Egg noodles
- Rice
Instructions
- Prepare the slow cooker
Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker or spray it with nonstick cooking spray. Place the sliced onions in the bottom. - Season and coat the cube steaks
In a large resealable bag or shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Add the cube steaks one at a time and coat them well on all sides. - Brown the steaks
Heat the canola oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the cube steaks for about 1–2 minutes per side, just until lightly golden. You do not need to cook them through. - Transfer to the slow cooker
Place the browned cube steaks on top of the onions in the slow cooker. - Add liquid and slow cook
Pour 2 cups of water over the steaks. Cover and cook on Low for 7–8 hours, or until the cube steaks are very tender. - Make the gravy mixture
In a bowl, whisk together the brown gravy mix, mushroom gravy mix, onion gravy mix, and the remaining 1 cup of water until smooth. - Finish the gravy
Pour the gravy mixture into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cooking. Stir gently around the meat so the gravy mixes in well without breaking the steaks apart too much. - Serve
Spoon the cube steak and rich brown gravy over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice and serve hot.
Tips
- If you want even more flavor, you can add a few sliced mushrooms with the onions.
- Browning the cube steaks first gives the dish a deeper, richer taste.
- If the gravy seems too thick, add a splash of warm water or beef broth at the end.
- This recipe is classic comfort food and goes really well with green beans or buttered corn on the side.
