Air Fryer Blooming Onion
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet onion
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Cooking spray or a little oil
Dipping Sauce
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- Pinch of garlic powder
- Few drops hot sauce (optional)
Instructions
1. Cut the Onion
- Peel the onion and cut about 1 cm from the top.
- Leave the root intact.
- Place the onion root-side down and make cuts from top to bottom into 4 sections, then cut each section again until you have many “petals.”
- Gently spread the onion open with your hands.
2. Prepare the Coating
- In one bowl mix flour and spices.
- In another bowl whisk eggs with milk.
- Dip the onion first in flour mixture, then egg mixture, then breadcrumbs.
- Make sure the coating gets between the petals.
3. Air Fry
- Spray with cooking oil.
- Place in the air fryer basket.
- Cook at 180°C (350°F) for 18–20 minutes until golden and crispy.
Make the Sauce
Mix all sauce ingredients together and serve with the blooming onion.
Tips
- Use a large sweet onion for best results.
- Spray enough oil so it becomes crispy.
- Serve immediately while hot and crunchy.
