Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding
Ingredients
- 4 cups white bread, cubed (about 8 slices, preferably day-old)
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional but traditional)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish (9×9 or 9×13).
- Heat milk and butter together until warm (not boiling).
- In a bowl, mix eggs, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
- Slowly add the warm milk mixture into the egg mixture, stirring constantly.
- Add bread cubes and mix well so they soak up the custard.
- Stir in raisins if using.
- Pour into baking dish.
- Bake 40–50 minutes until set and golden on top.
Vanilla Sauce
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (or milk for lighter version)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine butter, sugars, and cream.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring until it boils and thickens (about 5–8 minutes).
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
- Serve warm over bread pudding.
