My Grandma’s Apple Strudel Recipe
Ingredients
For the dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- ¾ cup lukewarm water
For the apple filling
- 5–6 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled & thinly sliced
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup raisins (optional)
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)
- Juice of ½ lemon
- ½ cup breadcrumbs (lightly toasted in butter)
- ¼ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
For finishing
- 3 tbsp melted butter
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
1. Make the dough
- Mix flour and salt in a bowl.
- Add oil and water, then knead until smooth.
- Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the filling
- In a large bowl, combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and raisins.
- Toast breadcrumbs in butter until golden, then mix into the apples.
3. Stretch the dough
- Place dough on a floured cloth or towel.
- Roll it out, then gently stretch it until very thin (almost see-through).
4. Assemble the strudel
- Brush dough lightly with melted butter.
- Spread the apple mixture along one side.
- Roll it up carefully using the cloth.
5. Bake
- Place on a baking sheet.
- Brush with more butter.
- Bake at 180°C (350°F) for about 35–45 minutes, until golden.
6. Serve
- Let cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar.
- Slice and enjoy warm
