The Ultimate Overnight Christmas Morning Breakfast Casserole
Ingredients
- 1 lb breakfast sausage (cooked and crumbled)
- 10 cups white or French bread, cubed
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- ½ cup half-and-half (or light cream)
- 1 tsp dry mustard
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Cook the sausage
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat.
- Prepare the casserole layers
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Layer half of the bread cubes on the bottom, then half of the cooked sausage, and half of the shredded cheese.
- Repeat layers with the remaining bread, sausage, and cheese.
- Mix the egg custard
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, half-and-half, dry mustard, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
- Assemble the casserole
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread, sausage, and cheese. Press down lightly to help the bread absorb the custard.
- Cover the casserole tightly with foil and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours).
- Bake the casserole
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake covered for 20 minutes, then uncover and bake an additional 25–35 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing.
Tips
- Using slightly stale bread helps it absorb the custard better and gives a firmer texture.
- You can swap the sausage with bacon, ham, or even vegetables for variations.
- Prep it the night before for a stress-free Christmas morning!
