The Ultimate Overnight Christmas Morning Breakfast Casserole

The Ultimate Overnight Christmas Morning Breakfast Casserole

Ingredients

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage (cooked and crumbled)
  • 10 cups white or French bread, cubed
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup half-and-half (or light cream)
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cook the sausage
    • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat.
  2. Prepare the casserole layers
    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
    • Layer half of the bread cubes on the bottom, then half of the cooked sausage, and half of the shredded cheese.
    • Repeat layers with the remaining bread, sausage, and cheese.
  3. Mix the egg custard
    • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, half-and-half, dry mustard, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
  4. Assemble the casserole
    • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread, sausage, and cheese. Press down lightly to help the bread absorb the custard.
    • Cover the casserole tightly with foil and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours).
  5. Bake the casserole
    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Bake covered for 20 minutes, then uncover and bake an additional 25–35 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
    • Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing.

Tips

  • Using slightly stale bread helps it absorb the custard better and gives a firmer texture.
  • You can swap the sausage with bacon, ham, or even vegetables for variations.
  • Prep it the night before for a stress-free Christmas morning!
