Philly Cheesesteak Casserole
Ingredients
- 1½ lb (680 g) ground beef or thinly sliced steak
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced (optional)
- 2 cups shredded provolone cheese
- 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 4 Tbsp butter
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 4–6 cups diced bread (French or Italian loaf)
Instructions
- Preheat oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). - Cook vegetables
In a large skillet, heat olive oil and 2 Tbsp butter over medium heat.
Add sliced onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Cook until soft, about 5–7 minutes. - Cook meat
Push vegetables to the side. Add ground beef or steak. Cook until browned. Drain excess fat. - Make the sauce
Sprinkle flour over the meat and vegetable mixture. Stir to coat.
Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
Simmer 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. - Assemble the casserole
In a greased baking dish, layer:- Half of the diced bread
- Half of the beef and vegetable mixture
- Half of the provolone and mozzarella cheese
Repeat for a second layer with the remaining ingredients.
- Bake
Cover the casserole with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake another 10–15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden. - Serve
Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before cutting into squares. Serve warm.
Tips
- For authentic Philly flavor, use thinly sliced steak instead of ground beef.
- Add sliced pepperoncini or pickles for a tangy twist.
- Serve with ketchup, hot sauce, or mustard if desired.
