Swedish Meatball Noodle Bake

A warm, creamy, and comforting casserole that combines classic Swedish-style meatballs with tender egg noodles, all baked together in a rich sauce. Perfect for a cozy family meal.

 Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, very finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice or nutmeg (essential for Swedish flavor)

For the Noodles & Sauce:

  • 250 g (8 oz) egg noodles
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Topping (Optional):

  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella, Emmental, or Gruyère cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

 Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F.
  2. Cook the egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a bowl, combine all the meatball ingredients until well mixed.
  4. Form small meatballs and brown them in a skillet with a little oil until golden (they do not need to be fully cooked). Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk for 1 minute.
  6. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, then add the cream and Worcestershire sauce.
  7. Season with salt and pepper and simmer until the sauce thickens.
  8. Return the meatballs to the sauce and gently stir.
  9. In a baking dish, combine the cooked noodles with the meatballs and sauce.
  10. Sprinkle cheese on top if using.
  11. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until bubbly and lightly golden.
  12. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.

 Serving Suggestions

Serve with a fresh green salad, steamed vegetables, or roasted broccoli for a complete and comforting meal.
