Buttermilk Biscuits with Sausage Gravy
Ingredients
For the biscuits:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 6 tbsp cold butter (cubed)
- 3/4 cup buttermilk (cold)
For the sausage gravy:
- 1 lb breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 cups milk
- Salt & black pepper to taste
- Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes
Instructions
1. Make the biscuits
- Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F).
- Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Cut in cold butter until mixture looks crumbly.
- Add buttermilk and mix just until dough forms (don’t overmix).
- Roll out gently and cut biscuits.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden.
2. Make the sausage gravy
- Cook sausage in a pan until browned.
- Sprinkle flour over sausage and stir well (this makes the roux).
- Slowly pour in milk while stirring constantly.
- Simmer until thick and creamy.
- Season with salt, pepper, and optional spice.
Serve
Split warm biscuits and pour the hot sausage gravy over the top.
