 Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding

Ingredients

  • 4 cups white bread, cubed (about 8 slices, preferably day-old)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional but traditional)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish (9×9 or 9×13).
  2. Heat milk and butter together until warm (not boiling).
  3. In a bowl, mix eggs, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
  4. Slowly add the warm milk mixture into the egg mixture, stirring constantly.
  5. Add bread cubes and mix well so they soak up the custard.
  6. Stir in raisins if using.
  7. Pour into baking dish.
  8. Bake 40–50 minutes until set and golden on top.

 Vanilla Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or milk for lighter version)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

 Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine butter, sugars, and cream.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring until it boils and thickens (about 5–8 minutes).
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  4. Serve warm over bread pudding.
