Cheddar Cheese Rolls: Soft, Fluffy, and Packed with Bold Flavor

Golden on the outside, pillowy on the inside, and loaded with sharp, melty cheddar in every bite — these rolls are the kind you pull apart while they’re still warm. Perfect beside soup, for sandwiches, or straight from the tray with a little butter.

 Ingredients (12 rolls)

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2¼ tsp instant yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese

 Instructions

  1. Mix the dough
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Add warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead
Knead 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If sticky, dust lightly with flour.
  3. First rise
Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 60–90 minutes until doubled.
  4. Add the cheese
Punch down the dough and knead in the shredded cheddar until evenly distributed.
  5. Shape
Divide into 12 pieces, roll into balls, and place in a greased baking dish.
  6. Second rise
Cover and let rise 30–40 minutes until puffy.
  7. Bake
Brush tops with melted butter. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 18–22 minutes until golden.
  8. Finish
Brush again with butter while hot. Serve warm.

 Tips

  • Add a pinch of garlic powder or dried herbs to the dough for extra flavor.
  • Swap cheddar with mozzarella or a cheese blend.
  • These freeze beautifully — reheat and enjoy!
