Unstuffed Cabbage Beef
About This Dish
This is a lazy version of traditional cabbage rolls—same comforting flavors but no rolling required. It combines ground beef, cabbage, rice, and tomato sauce into one hearty meal.
Ingredients
- 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small cabbage, chopped (about 5–6 cups)
- 1 can diced tomatoes (400 g)
- 1 can tomato sauce (200–250 g)
- 1–1½ cups beef broth
- 1 cup uncooked rice
- 1–2 tbsp brown sugar (optional, for sweetness)
- 1 tbsp vinegar (for a slight tang)
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt & black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cook the beef
In a large pot or skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat. - Add aromatics
Add onion and garlic. Cook 3–5 minutes until soft and fragrant. - Add cabbage & sauce
Stir in:- chopped cabbage
- diced tomatoes
- tomato sauce
- beef broth
- sugar, vinegar, and spices
Mix well.
- Simmer
Bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for 15–20 minutes until cabbage softens. - Add rice
Stir in uncooked rice, reduce heat to low, cover, and cook another 20 minutes until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed. - Rest & serve
Let sit 5 minutes before serving. Taste and adjust seasoning.

- Serve as-is (like a stew)
- Or over rice / mashed potatoes
