Swedish Meatball Noodle Bake
A warm, creamy, and comforting casserole that combines classic Swedish-style meatballs with tender egg noodles, all baked together in a rich sauce. Perfect for a cozy family meal.
Ingredients
For the Meatballs:
- 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, very finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice or nutmeg (essential for Swedish flavor)
For the Noodles & Sauce:
- 250 g (8 oz) egg noodles
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Topping (Optional):
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella, Emmental, or Gruyère cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F.
- Cook the egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- In a bowl, combine all the meatball ingredients until well mixed.
- Form small meatballs and brown them in a skillet with a little oil until golden (they do not need to be fully cooked). Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk for 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in the beef broth, then add the cream and Worcestershire sauce.
- Season with salt and pepper and simmer until the sauce thickens.
- Return the meatballs to the sauce and gently stir.
- In a baking dish, combine the cooked noodles with the meatballs and sauce.
- Sprinkle cheese on top if using.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, until bubbly and lightly golden.
- Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.
