Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes
These creamy, cheesy scalloped potatoes are the ultimate comfort food. Thinly sliced potatoes are layered with a rich, creamy cheese sauce and baked until tender, golden, and bubbling.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the cheddar cheese, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until smooth and creamy.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping each slice.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Add the remaining potatoes and pour the remaining sauce over the top.
- Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil, sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly over the top, and bake for another 20–25 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Let the potatoes rest for 10–15 minutes before serving.
Serve warm as a delicious side dish with roasted chicken, beef, pork, or turkey.
