Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes with Onions
These air fryer sweet potatoes are soft and tender inside with lightly crispy, caramelized edges. Adding sliced onion gives them a delicious savory-sweet flavor and makes this an easy side dish for almost any meal.
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces
- 1 small yellow or red onion, thinly sliced
- 1–2 tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder, optional
- ½ teaspoon paprika, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C) for about 3 minutes.
- Prepare the vegetables: Place the sweet potato pieces and sliced onion in a large bowl. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and any optional seasonings you like. Toss until everything is evenly coated.
- Air fry: Arrange the sweet potatoes and onions in the air fryer basket in as close to a single layer as possible.
- Cook at 370°F (188°C) for 20–25 minutes, shaking the basket or tossing the vegetables halfway through cooking.
- Continue cooking until the sweet potatoes are tender inside and lightly golden and crispy around the edges. If your pieces are larger, they may need a few extra minutes.
- Serve immediately as a side dish with chicken, pork, steak, or fish.
Tips
- Cut the sweet potatoes into similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly.
- Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary.
- For sweeter, more caramelized onions, add them from the beginning. For more texture, add them during the last 10–12 minutes.
- Leftovers are delicious added to salads, grain bowls, or breakfast bowls with eggs.
- For extra flavor, finish with a pinch of cinnamon, smoked paprika, or fresh herbs.
