Classic Beef Chili Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook for 3–4 minutes until they begin to soften.
  3. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess grease if needed.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  5. Add the tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Stir well to coat the meat and vegetables with the spices.
  6. Pour in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and beef broth. Stir everything together.
  7. Add the kidney beans and bring the chili to a gentle boil.
  8. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For an even richer flavor, let it simmer for up to 45 minutes.
  9. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed. Add more chili powder for extra flavor or cayenne pepper for more heat.
  10. Serve hot with your favorite toppings.
