Introduction
Smooth, buttery, and incredibly fluffy, these classic mashed potatoes are the perfect comfort-food side dish for any meal.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs (900 g) Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) warm milk or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Extra butter for serving
Instructions
- Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold salted water.
- Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes, or until fork-tender.
- Drain the potatoes well and return them to the hot pot for 1–2 minutes to remove excess moisture.
- Mash the potatoes until smooth.
- Add the butter and warm milk gradually while mixing until creamy.
- Season with salt and black pepper.
- Serve hot with an extra pat of butter on top.
Tips
- Use warm milk for a smoother texture.
- For extra-rich mashed potatoes, replace part of the milk with heavy cream.
- Avoid overmixing, which can make the potatoes gluey.
