Swedish Meatballs and Noodles
Ingredients
For the Meatballs:
- 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
- 1 small onion (finely grated)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp allspice
For the Sauce:
- 3 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup milk or cream
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- Salt & pepper to taste
For Serving:
- 250–300 g egg noodles
- Fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Meatballs
- In a large bowl, mix ground beef, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, and spices.
- Mix well until combined.
- Shape into small balls (about 2–3 cm each).
Swedish meatballs are usually seasoned with nutmeg and allspice for that classic flavor.
2. Cook the Meatballs
- Heat a pan with a little oil or butter.
- Fry the meatballs until browned on all sides and fully cooked.
- Remove and set aside.
3. Make the Creamy Sauce
- In the same pan, melt butter.
- Add flour and whisk for 1–2 minutes.
- Slowly add beef broth while stirring.
- Add milk or cream and keep stirring until smooth and thick.
- Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
4. Combine
- Return meatballs to the sauce.
- Let them simmer for 5–10 minutes until coated and juicy.
5. Cook the Noodles
- Boil egg noodles in salted water according to package instructions (about 5–7 minutes).
- Drain well.
6. Serve
- Place noodles on a plate.
- Add meatballs and pour the creamy sauce on top.
- Garnish with parsley if you like.
Tips
- You can mix beef + pork for more authentic flavor.
- Serve with lingonberry jam if you want the real Swedish touch.
- The sauce should be creamy, rich, and slightly spiced.
