Savory Baked Cheese Casserole
Ingredients:
- 4 cups bread cubes (day-old or toasted slightly)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese blend)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup chopped onions
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Fresh herbs (like parsley or thyme) for garnish
Instructions:
- Preheat oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- Prepare bread base: In a large bowl, combine the bread cubes, shredded cheddar, Parmesan, and chopped onions. Mix well.
- Make custard mixture: In another bowl, whisk together milk, heavy cream, eggs, melted butter, garlic, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Combine: Pour the custard mixture over the bread and cheese mixture. Gently fold until all bread cubes are coated and the cheese is evenly distributed.
- Let it soak: Allow the mixture to sit for 10–15 minutes so the bread absorbs the custard.
- Bake: Transfer to the prepared baking dish. Bake uncovered for 35–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set in the middle.
- Garnish and serve: Sprinkle with fresh herbs before serving. Enjoy warm!
This casserole is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even as a side dish for dinner. You can also add cooked bacon, ham, or vegetables for extra flavor.
