Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 jar (or 4–5 oz) dried chipped beef, sliced
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Pinch of salt (optional, since beef is salty)
- 4–6 slices bread, toasted
Instructions
- Prepare the beef
If the chipped beef is very salty, rinse it lightly under water and pat dry. Slice into bite-sized pieces if needed. - Make the roux
In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, until smooth and slightly golden. - Add the milk
Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens, about 3–5 minutes. - Add the beef
Stir in the chipped beef and black pepper. Let it simmer gently for another 2–3 minutes until heated through and creamy. - Taste and adjust
Add salt only if needed. The beef is usually salty enough on its own. - Serve
Spoon the creamy chipped beef over warm toasted bread.
Tips
- Add a pinch of paprika for extra flavor.
- Serve with a side of eggs for a hearty breakfast.
- You can substitute dried beef with leftover cooked beef or even turkey.
Storage
- Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Reheat gently on the stove, adding a splash of milk if it gets too thick.
Simple, creamy, and filling—perfect for a quick comfort meal!
