 Ingredients

For the Beef

  • 1 lb beef sirloin, flank steak, or ribeye, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Stir-Fry

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

 Instructions

1. Marinate the Beef

Place the thinly sliced beef in a bowl. Add the soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and black pepper.

Toss thoroughly to coat the beef and let it rest for 10–15 minutes.

2. Caramelize the Onions

Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat.

Add the sliced onions and cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft, golden, and caramelized.

Transfer the onions to a plate and set aside.

3. Stir-Fry the Beef

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the remaining tablespoon of oil.

Add the beef in a single layer. Cook for about 2–3 minutes per side, stirring occasionally, until browned and just cooked through.

Avoid overcrowding the pan so the beef gets a beautiful sear.

4. Add the Aromatics

Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet.

Stir-fry for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.

5. Make the Sauce

Add the soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, and beef broth.

Stir everything together and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

Pour in the cornstarch slurry and stir continuously for 1–2 minutes, until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.

Add the caramelized onions back to the skillet and toss everything together.

6. Finish and Serve

Cook for another 1–2 minutes so the beef and onions absorb the sauce.

Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.

Serve hot over steamed white rice or noodles and enjoy!
