Stuffed Cabbage Casserole
A comforting, hearty casserole made with tender cabbage, savory ground beef, fluffy rice, and a rich tomato sauce, all baked together under a delicious layer of melted cheese!
Ingredients
- 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup cooked white rice
- 1 can diced tomatoes, about 14 oz
- 1 can tomato sauce, about 15 oz
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 teaspoon sugar, optional
- 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Fresh parsley, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a large baking dish.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the chopped cabbage and cook for about 5–7 minutes, until slightly tender. Drain well.
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and onion over medium-high heat until the beef is browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, pepper, and sugar if using. Simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add the cooked rice and stir until everything is well combined.
- Spread half of the cabbage into the prepared baking dish. Spoon the beef and rice mixture evenly over the cabbage.
- Top with the remaining cabbage and gently press everything down.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil, sprinkle the mozzarella and cheddar cheese over the top, and return to the oven for another 10–15 minutes, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
- Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
