This easy skillet recipe comes together with simple ingredients and makes a delicious weeknight dinner that the whole family will love!

Ingredients

  • 6 Italian sausages or your favorite sausages
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

1. Brown the sausages

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausages and cook for about 8–10 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides.

Remove the sausages from the skillet and set them aside. They do not need to be completely cooked through yet.

2. Caramelize the onions

Add the remaining olive oil and butter to the same skillet.

Add the sliced onions and cook over medium-low heat for about 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let the onions slowly soften and turn golden brown.

If the onions begin sticking to the skillet, add a small splash of broth and scrape up the flavorful browned bits from the bottom.

3. Add the garlic and seasonings

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.

Add the brown sugar, thyme, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to coat the onions.

4. Make the sauce

Pour in the broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir everything together, scraping the bottom of the skillet to release any browned bits.

5. Finish cooking the sausages

Return the sausages to the skillet and nestle them into the caramelized onions.

Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for about 8–10 minutes, or until the sausages are completely cooked through and the sauce has slightly thickened.

For food safety, sausages should reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for pork or beef sausage, or 165°F (74°C) for poultry sausage.

6. Garnish and serve

Spoon the caramelized onions and sauce over the sausages. Sprinkle with fresh parsley and serve hot.

Tips for the Best Caramelized Onions

  • Cook the onions slowly over medium-low heat for the best flavor.
  • Don’t rush the caramelization process.
  • Use the same skillet for the onions so they absorb all the flavor from the browned sausages.
  • A splash of broth helps loosen the flavorful bits stuck to the bottom of the pan.
