Crispy Onion Strings – Air Fryer Keto
Ingredients (4 servings):
- 1 large white or yellow onion, sliced very thinly
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tbsp heavy cream
- ¾ cup blanched superfine almond flour
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- Avocado oil spray
Instructions:
- Prepare the onion: Slice the onion very thinly. A mandoline set to about 1.5 mm works best. Separate the slices into individual rings and thin strands.
- Prepare the wet mixture: In a bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and heavy cream.
- Prepare the coating: In another bowl, combine the almond flour, Parmesan, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Coat the onions: Dip each onion strand into the egg mixture, allowing the excess to drip off. Then toss it thoroughly in the almond-flour Parmesan coating. Make sure the pieces are well coated.
- Air fry: Lightly spray the air-fryer basket with avocado oil. Arrange the coated onion strings in a single layer, working in batches if necessary. Lightly spray the tops with avocado oil.
- Cook at 375°F (190°C) for about 8–12 minutes, gently shaking or turning them halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
- Let them cool for 2–3 minutes—they become even crispier as they cool.
Tip: Don’t overcrowd the air fryer. Good airflow is the key to getting the onion strings really crispy.
