Crispy Southern Fried Okra

 Crispy Southern Fried Okra

Golden, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, this Southern Fried Okra is a classic comfort-food side dish that’s easy to make and packed with flavor. Perfect alongside fried chicken, barbecue, or served as a crunchy snack with your favorite dipping sauce!

 Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh okra, sliced into ½-inch pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

 Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the okra, then slice it into ½-inch rounds.
  2. Place the sliced okra in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over it. Let it soak for 10–15 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  4. Remove the okra from the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off.
  5. Toss the okra in the cornmeal mixture until each piece is evenly coated.
  6. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Fry the okra in small batches for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Transfer the fried okra to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.

 Tips

  • Don’t overcrowd the pan—fry in batches for the crispiest texture.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or Cajun seasoning to the coating.
  • Use fresh, small okra pods for the most tender results.
  • Serve with ranch dressing, spicy aioli, or your favorite dipping sauce.
