Introduction

Wonton Soup is a classic Chinese comfort dish featuring delicate pork-filled wontons served in a light, flavorful broth. It’s warm, soothing, and surprisingly easy to make at home. Perfect as an appetizer or a light meal, this soup combines tender dumplings with aromatic broth and fresh vegetables for a satisfying bowl of goodness.

Ingredients

For the Wontons:

  • 30 wonton wrappers
  • 250 g (½ lb) ground pork
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 green onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

For the Soup:

  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 cup baby spinach or bok choy
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Filling

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the ground pork, soy sauce, sesame oil, green onion, ginger, garlic, white pepper, and cornstarch.
  2. Mix until well combined.

Step 2: Assemble the Wontons

  1. Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface.
  2. Add about 1 teaspoon of filling in the center.
  3. Wet the edges with water.
  4. Fold into a triangle and press the edges firmly to seal.
  5. Bring the two bottom corners together and pinch to form the traditional wonton shape.
  6. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

Step 3: Make the Soup

  1. In a large pot, bring the chicken broth to a gentle boil.
  2. Add soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger.
  3. Simmer for 5 minutes to develop flavor.

Step 4: Cook the Wontons

  1. Carefully add the wontons to the simmering broth.
  2. Cook for 4–5 minutes, or until they float and the filling is cooked through.

Step 5: Finish and Serve

  1. Add the spinach or bok choy and cook for 1 minute.
  2. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  3. Garnish with sliced green onions.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve hot with chili oil or chili crisp.
  • Pair with fried rice or vegetable spring rolls.
  • Add sliced mushrooms for extra flavor and texture.

Tips

  • Freeze uncooked wontons on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 3 months.
  • Chicken, shrimp, or turkey can be used instead of pork.
  • Homemade broth will give the soup an even richer taste.
