Old-Fashioned Custard Pie
Ingredients
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
- 3 large eggs, beaten
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups milk (whole milk works best)
- Ground nutmeg, for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare the filling
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the beaten eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract until smooth. - Add the milk
Gradually stir in the milk, mixing gently until everything is fully combined. - Fill the crust
Place the unbaked pie crust into a pie dish if not already. Carefully pour the custard mixture into the crust. - Add topping
Lightly sprinkle ground nutmeg over the top for that classic flavor. - Bake
Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the center is set but still slightly jiggly. - Cool
Remove from the oven and let the pie cool completely. The custard will continue to set as it cools.
Tips
- For a smoother texture, warm the milk slightly before mixing (not boiling).
- Avoid overbaking—custard should be soft, not dry.
- Chill before serving for the best flavor and texture.
