Ham & Cheese Puff Pastry
Flaky, buttery puff pastry filled with savory ham and melted cheese, baked until golden and irresistible. Perfect for breakfast, snacks, or even a light dinner.
Ingredients:
• 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
• 10 oz sliced deli ham
• 8 oz Gruyère cheese slices (or Swiss cheese)
• 1 egg (for egg wash)
• 1 tablespoon milk
• 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional, for extra flavor)
• 1 teaspoon dried oregano or thyme (optional)
• A pinch of black pepper
Instructions:
- Prepare the oven and pastry
Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Take the puff pastry out of the fridge and let it soften slightly so it’s easy to handle. - Roll out the pastry
Lightly flour your work surface and gently roll out each sheet of puff pastry to smooth it and slightly enlarge it. - Add the filling
Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the pastry if you like extra flavor.
Place slices of ham evenly over the pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
Add the cheese slices on top of the ham. - Season
Sprinkle a little black pepper and dried herbs for extra taste. - Shape the pastry
You can fold the pastry in half like a rectangle or roll it into a log (like a croissant-style roll).
Press the edges firmly to seal so the cheese doesn’t leak out while baking. - Egg wash
In a small bowl, beat the egg with milk. Brush the top of each pastry with this mixture to give it a beautiful golden color. - Cut and prepare
If you made a roll, slice it into smaller pieces. If folded, you can leave it whole or cut into squares. - Bake
Place the pastries on the prepared tray and bake for 18–25 minutes, or until puffed up and golden brown. - Cool slightly and serve
Let them cool for a few minutes before serving. The cheese inside will be hot and melted.
Tips for Best Results:
• Don’t overfill the pastry to avoid leaking cheese
• Always seal the edges well
• Bake in a hot oven so the pastry puffs properly
• You can add extras like spinach, mushrooms, or caramelized onions
Serving Ideas:
Serve warm with a fresh salad, soup, or a simple yogurt dip. They’re also great for parties or as a quick snack anytime.
