CUSTARD CREAM CAKE BARS
INGREDIENTS
For the cake
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 1 cup milk
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the custard filling
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For topping
- Powdered sugar
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Make the custard
In a saucepan, whisk together milk, sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
Remove from heat, add vanilla, and let it cool.
2. Prepare the cake batter
In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and creamy.
Add the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla.
Gradually add the flour, baking powder, and milk.
Mix until smooth and well combined.
3. Assemble the cake
Grease a baking dish.
Pour half of the batter into the pan and spread evenly.
Add the custard layer on top.
Cover with the remaining batter.
4. Bake
Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 30 to 35 minutes, or until golden brown.
5. Finish
Let the cake cool slightly.
Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
TIPS
- Let it cool before cutting so the custard sets nicely
- Add a little lemon zest to the custard for extra flavor
- Serve warm or chilled
