MONTEREY SAUSAGE PIE
A hearty, cheesy, and comforting dish perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dinner.
INGREDIENTS
Meat & Vegetables
- 1 lb (450 g) ground sausage (pork, turkey, or chicken)
- 1 cup onion, chopped
- 1/2–1 cup bell pepper, chopped (optional)
- 1/2 cup mushrooms, chopped (optional)
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
Dairy & Eggs
- 2 to 2 1/2 cups Monterey Jack cheese, shredded (divided)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 1/3 cups milk (or half-and-half for richer taste)
Dry Ingredients & Seasoning
- 3/4 cup baking mix (like Bisquick)
- 3/4 teaspoon dried sage
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Salt to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Cook the Filling
In a large skillet over medium heat:
- Cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked
- Add onion, bell pepper, mushrooms, and garlic
- Cook until vegetables are soft
- Drain excess grease
This step is important to avoid a watery pie
Step 2: Add Cheese
- Stir in about 2 cups of shredded cheese into the sausage mixture
- Mix well
Step 3: Assemble the Pie
- Grease a 9-inch pie dish
- Spread the sausage mixture evenly in the dish
Step 4: Prepare the Batter
In a bowl, whisk together:
- Eggs
- Milk
- Baking mix
- Sage and pepper
Mix until smooth
Step 5: Pour & Bake
- Pour the batter over the sausage mixture
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 minutes
Step 6: Add Final Cheese
- Sprinkle remaining cheese on top
- Bake another 1–2 minutes until melted
Step 7: Rest & Serve
- Let the pie rest for 10 minutes before slicing
- Serve warm

- Use spicy sausage if you like a little heat
- Add cheddar cheese for extra flavor
