APPLE BROWN BETTY
DESCRIPTION
Apple Brown Betty is a traditional American dessert made with layers of tender spiced apples and buttery sweet crumbs. It’s simple, comforting, and perfect for fall, just like grandma used to make.
INGREDIENTS
For the Apple Filling
- 5 cups apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
For the Crumb Mixture
- 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs (fresh or slightly dry)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Prepare the Oven
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a medium baking dish with butter or oil.
Step 2: Prepare the Apples
In a large bowl:
- Add sliced apples
- Pour in lemon juice (to prevent browning)
- Add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and salt
- Mix well until apples are evenly coated
Let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes to release natural juices.
Step 3: Make the Crumb Mixture
In another bowl:
- Combine breadcrumbs, brown sugar, white sugar, and cinnamon
- Pour melted butter over the mixture
- Stir until everything is moist and crumbly
Step 4: Assemble the Layers
In the prepared baking dish:
- Add a layer of apples
- Add a layer of crumb mixture
- Repeat layers (apples → crumbs)
Make sure the top layer is crumbs for a crispy finish.
Step 5: Bake the Dessert
- Cover the dish with foil
- Bake for 30 minutes
- Remove foil and bake another 20–25 minutes
The top should be golden brown and slightly crispy, and the apples soft and bubbling.
FINAL TOUCH
Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving so it sets nicely.
