Sourdough Starter (Easy Homemade Recipe)
Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup lukewarm water
Instructions:
Day 1:
- In a clean glass jar or bowl, mix the flour and water until smooth.
- Scrape down the sides and loosely cover the jar (do not seal tightly).
- Leave at room temperature (20–25°C) for 24 hours.
Day 2:
- You may see a few bubbles — that’s normal.
- Discard half of the mixture.
- Add:
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup water
- Mix well, cover loosely, and leave for another 24 hours.
Day 3–7:
- Repeat the same feeding process every day:
- Discard half
- Add 1 cup flour + 1/2 cup water
- Stir well and keep at room temperature.
After about 5–7 days, your starter should:
- Double in size within 4–6 hours after feeding
- Smell slightly tangy (like yogurt)
- Be bubbly and active
When it reaches this stage, it’s ready to use!
How to Store:
- If baking often: keep at room temperature and feed daily.
- If baking occasionally: store in the fridge and feed once a week.
How to Know It’s Ready:
Do the float test:
Drop a small spoonful into water — if it floats, it’s ready for baking!
