Sourdough Starter

 Sourdough Starter (Easy Homemade Recipe)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water

 Instructions:

Day 1:

  1. In a clean glass jar or bowl, mix the flour and water until smooth.
  2. Scrape down the sides and loosely cover the jar (do not seal tightly).
  3. Leave at room temperature (20–25°C) for 24 hours.

Day 2:

  1. You may see a few bubbles — that’s normal.
  2. Discard half of the mixture.
  3. Add:
    • 1 cup flour
    • 1/2 cup water
  4. Mix well, cover loosely, and leave for another 24 hours.

Day 3–7:

  1. Repeat the same feeding process every day:
    • Discard half
    • Add 1 cup flour + 1/2 cup water
  2. Stir well and keep at room temperature.

After about 5–7 days, your starter should:

  • Double in size within 4–6 hours after feeding
  • Smell slightly tangy (like yogurt)
  • Be bubbly and active

When it reaches this stage, it’s ready to use!

 How to Store:

  • If baking often: keep at room temperature and feed daily.
  • If baking occasionally: store in the fridge and feed once a week.

 How to Know It’s Ready:

Do the float test:
Drop a small spoonful into water — if it floats, it’s ready for baking!
