Classic Meatballs with Brown Gravy
Ingredients
For the Meatballs:
- 1 lb (500g) ground beef
- ½ lb (250g) ground pork (optional but recommended)
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup milk
- ½ cup finely chopped green onions
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp onion powder
For the Brown Gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
Make the Meatballs:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, green onions, garlic, salt, pepper, and onion powder.
- Mix until just combined (don’t overmix).
- Shape into medium-sized balls.
Cook the Meatballs:
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
- Brown the meatballs on all sides (about 8–10 minutes).
- Remove and set aside.
Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt butter.
- Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden.
- Slowly whisk in beef broth.
- Add Worcestershire sauce.
- Simmer until thickened (about 3–5 minutes).
Finish:
- Return meatballs to the skillet.
- Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until fully cooked.
- Spoon gravy over the top before serving.
Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.
