Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast
Ingredients
- 8 slices white sandwich bread, toasted
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 cups whole milk (warm)
- 1 jar (2.5 oz) dried beef, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Salt to taste (optional – dried beef is salty)
Instructions
- Prepare the beef
If the dried beef is very salty, rinse it quickly under cold water and pat dry. Chop into small pieces. - Make the roux
In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
Add flour and whisk continuously for 1–2 minutes until smooth (do not brown). - Add milk
Slowly pour in warm milk while whisking to avoid lumps.
Cook until the sauce thickens (about 3–5 minutes). - Add beef & seasoning
Stir in chopped dried beef and black pepper.
Simmer for 2–3 minutes until creamy and heated through. - Serve
Spoon generously over toasted bread slices. Serve hot.
Tips
- For extra richness, add a splash of heavy cream.
- Some people add a pinch of garlic powder.
- Traditionally served for breakfast.
