Ingredients
For the Filling:
- 1 lb (450–500 g) ground beef (or Italian sausage)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup marinara sauce or pasta sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional but recommended)
For the Crust:
- 1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough (8-count)
Optional Toppings & Garnish:
- Extra mozzarella or Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley or basil, chopped
- Sliced olives, mushrooms, or bell peppers
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Meat Filling
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes, until the onion becomes soft and fragrant.
Stir in the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and paprika. Let the mixture simmer for 5–7 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend and the sauce to thicken slightly.
Remove from heat and stir in half of the mozzarella cheese to make the filling extra creamy.
Step 2: Prepare the Crescent Dough Base
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
Lightly grease a baking dish (9×13-inch or similar) with butter or cooking spray.
Unroll the crescent dough and press it evenly into the bottom of the dish, sealing the seams to form one continuous crust.
Step 3: Assemble the Casserole
Spread the prepared meat mixture evenly over the crescent dough base.
Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese generously over the top.
Optional: Add a second layer of crescent dough on top for a thicker, pie-style casserole.
Step 4: Bake
Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the crescent crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
If the top browns too quickly, loosely cover with aluminum foil for the last few minutes of baking.
Step 5: Rest and Serve
Remove from the oven and allow the casserole to rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. This helps it firm up and makes serving easier.
Cut into squares and serve warm.
