My Grandma’s Apple Strudel is a classic old-fashioned dessert made with tender spiced apples, sweet cinnamon sugar, and flaky golden pastry. This traditional European apple strudel recipe is perfect for holidays, family gatherings, or whenever you crave a warm, comforting homemade treat.

 Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 4–5 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and thinly sliced
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs (to absorb juices)

Pastry & Assembly

  • 1 package puff pastry or homemade strudel dough
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

 Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling: In a bowl, mix sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, lemon juice, and raisins. Set aside for 10–15 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Roll out the pastry dough into a thin rectangle.
  4. Brush melted butter over the dough and sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly.
  5. Spread the apple mixture across the dough, leaving a border around the edges.
  6. Carefully roll the dough into a log, tucking in the ends.
  7. Place seam-side down on the baking sheet. Brush the top with melted butter.
  8. Bake for 30–40 minutes, until golden brown and crisp.
  9. Cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar, slice, and serve warm.
