Cornbread Dressing

Cornbread Dressing Recipe (Classic Homemade Style)

What Is Cornbread Dressing?

Cornbread Dressing is a traditional American side dish made from crumbled cornbread mixed with sautéed vegetables, herbs, eggs, and broth, then baked until moist inside and lightly crisp on top. It is especially popular during holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, but it can also be enjoyed as a comforting everyday meal.

This dish has a rich, savory flavor, a soft and fluffy texture inside, and a golden baked crust on the surface. It pairs perfectly with roasted chicken, turkey, or grilled meats.

Ingredients

For the Cornbread (If Not Using Store-Bought)

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil or melted butter

(You can also use pre-made cornbread if preferred.)

For the Dressing Mixture

  • 3 to 4 cups crumbled cornbread
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 to 2 cups chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme or oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried sage (optional but traditional)
  • ½ cup chopped parsley
  • Optional add-ins: cooked chicken, sausage, mushrooms, apples, or nuts

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Bake the Cornbread (If Homemade)

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add milk, eggs, and oil or melted butter. Stir until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.
  5. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden and fully cooked.
  6. Allow the cornbread to cool, then crumble it into small pieces.

Step 2: Cook the Vegetables

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Add chopped onion and celery.
  3. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and fragrant.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Step 3: Make the Dressing Mixture

  1. Place the crumbled cornbread in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the cooked onion and celery mixture.
  3. Stir in eggs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, thyme, sage, and parsley.
  4. Slowly pour in broth, mixing gently until the mixture becomes moist but not overly wet.
    • The texture should be soft and scoopable, not soupy.

Step 4: Bake the Dressing

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C) if not already heated.
  2. Grease a baking dish with butter or oil.
  3. Spread the dressing mixture evenly in the dish.
  4. Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown and the center is set.
  5. Let it rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Texture and Flavor
