Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak
A classic American comfort dish: seasoned beef patties slow‑cooked in a rich savory gravy. Great served with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles!
Ingredients
For the Patties:
- 2 pounds (≈ 900 g) ground beef (80/20 mix)
- 2 egg yolks
- ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
- ¼ cup milk
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- A splash of vegetable oil for searing
For the Mushroom Gravy:
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 8 oz (≈ 225 g) mushrooms, sliced
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons all‑purpose flour
- 2½ cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, egg yolks, panko, milk, minced garlic, minced onion, salt, and pepper.
- Shape the mixture into about 6 oval patties, roughly ¾‑inch thick.
- Heat a splash of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium‑high heat.
- Sear the patties 2 minutes per side until lightly browned (they don’t need to cook through).
- Transfer the seared patties to the slow cooker.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add sliced mushrooms and onion and sauté until browned (≈ 5–6 minutes).
- Add the minced garlic and cook 1 minute more.
- Sprinkle the flour over the veggies and stir to coat, cooking 1 more minute.
- Slowly whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon, tomato paste, onion powder, and pepper. Simmer until slightly thickened (≈ 3–4 min).
- Pour this gravy mixture over the patties in the slow cooker.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 4 hours (or HIGH for 2 hours) until the patties are tender.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.
Serving Suggestions
Serve the Salisbury steak with:
- Mashed potatoes
- Buttered egg noodles
- Rice
- Steamed vegetables
Tips
Searing the patties before slow‑cooking adds flavor and helps hold them together.
For extra rich gravy, add sliced mushrooms with the sauce.
Can be served with gravy spooned over potatoes or noodles.
