Gooey Butter Cake – Classic Recipe

Gooey Butter Cake – Classic Recipe

Ingredients

For the Crust

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

For the Gooey Topping

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3½–4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Make the crust:
In a large bowl, mix the cake mix, eggs, and melted butter until well combined.
    The mixture will be thick.
Press it evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  3. Prepare the gooey layer:
In another bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth.
Add eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
Gradually mix in the powdered sugar until creamy and smooth.
  4. Assemble:
Pour the gooey mixture over the crust and spread evenly.
  5. Bake for 40–45 minutes.
The edges should be set, but the center should still be slightly gooey — do not overbake.
  6. Cool completely before slicing.
Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
