Amish Onion Fritters
Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside—these classic Amish onion fritters are simple, comforting, and perfect as a side dish or snack.
Ingredients
- 2 large onions, finely chopped
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¾ cup milk
- 1 large egg
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
- Prepare the batter
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. - Add wet ingredients
Add the milk and egg to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth. - Add onions
Stir in the chopped onions until well coated with the batter. - Heat the oil
Heat about 1–2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium heat (around 350°F / 175°C). - Fry the fritters
Drop spoonfuls of the onion batter into the hot oil. Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. - Drain and serve
Remove fritters and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm.

- Serve with sour cream, ranch dressing, or garlic sauce
- Great alongside grilled meats or as a snack
