Meat and Potato Casserole

Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef (or minced meat of choice)
  • 700 g potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) beef broth
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk or cream
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp dried thyme or oregano (optional)

 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven
    • Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F.
  2. Cook the meat
    • Heat oil in a skillet.
    • Sauté onion until soft, add garlic.
    • Add ground beef, cook until browned.
    • Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and herbs.
  3. Assemble the casserole
    • Grease a baking dish.
    • Layer half of the potatoes at the bottom.
    • Spread the cooked meat over the potatoes.
    • Add the remaining potatoes on top.
  4. Add liquid & cheese
    • Pour broth and milk (or cream) evenly over the dish.
    • Sprinkle cheese on top.
  5. Bake
    • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
    • Remove foil and bake another 15–20 minutes until golden and tender.
  6. Rest & serve
    • Let rest 10 minutes before serving.

 Optional Add-ins

  • Sliced mushrooms
  • Bell peppers
  • Cream of mushroom soup (for extra creaminess)
