Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp lemon zest (optional, but traditional)
  • Freshly grated nutmeg (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, flour, and salt.
  3. Add the melted butter and mix until smooth.
  4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each.
  5. Stir in buttermilk, vanilla, lemon juice, and lemon zest until fully combined.
  6. Pour the filling into the unbaked pie crust.
  7. Lightly sprinkle nutmeg on top if using.
  8. Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the center is set but still slightly jiggly.
  9. Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing (it firms up as it cools).

Serving Tips

  • Serve at room temperature or chilled
  • Delicious on its own or with whipped cream
  • Even better the next day

What It Tastes Like

Creamy custard texture with a slight tang from the buttermilk and lemon—sweet, rich, and comforting.
