Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie
Ingredients
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- ½ tsp lemon zest (optional, but traditional)
- Freshly grated nutmeg (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, flour, and salt.
- Add the melted butter and mix until smooth.
- Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each.
- Stir in buttermilk, vanilla, lemon juice, and lemon zest until fully combined.
- Pour the filling into the unbaked pie crust.
- Lightly sprinkle nutmeg on top if using.
- Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the center is set but still slightly jiggly.
- Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing (it firms up as it cools).
